Field Sampling & Geological Research

Collect samples and field observations, with clear records from collection to review.

Practical questions, defined methods.

We plan field work so that observations, samples, and context remain connected throughout collection, return, preparation, and technical review. The record is designed to remain understandable after the field team has left the site.

Start with the decision the work needs to support.

  1. 01

What collection pattern will represent the field question without overstating coverage?

  2. 02

Which observations and handling steps are necessary to preserve sample context?

  3. 03

How should field notes, labels, and returned material be reconciled?

Methods and project inputs.

Specific methods are selected after the question, material, and intended use are clear.

Methods may include

  • Field sampling plans
  • Chain-of-custody and label reconciliation
  • Geological observation records
  • Sample return and preparation review

Useful project inputs

  • The field question and material of interest
  • Access, schedule, and handling constraints
  • Required observations and downstream analysis

Work that can be reviewed and used.

  • Collection and field-documentation plan
  • Sample and notebook reconciliation record
  • Field summary with coverage limitations

What the work does not assume.

  • Field observations remain bounded by access, timing, and collection density.
  • Sample handling cannot recover context that was not recorded at collection.
  • Site-wide conditions are not inferred from a limited sampling pattern.

Released notes show how we frame routine questions, methods, observations, and limitations.

  1. Duplicate Field-Notebook Legibility Review

A legibility review of original and duplicate field sheets found the existing writing-pressure guidance adequate after minor layout changes.
